Project Overview

Mission Statement:
A bike tour to empower young people through first hand experience of Canadian Environmental Initiatives, to become involved in the critical sustainable action of their own local communities.

Focus Areas: Sites visited in the following areas
1. Green Building: Developers, Building Centres,
    Housing communities, Eco-homes
2. Community Connection:
      • Grassroots initiatives: Schools, campuses,
          community gardens, Farmer's Markets, businesses, local environmental groups, aboriginal reservations
      • Intentional communities: Eco-villages, co-housing, cooperatives, yoga community and retreat centers.

Outcomes:
- 23 sustainable initiatives visited
-An increase in networking and collaborating between visited sites
-One radio interview and 7 articles written about Ride the Wave to date
- 2,000 kilometers cycled
- 20 voice recorded interviews. In addition, many Video clips and photos were collected by team members for
RTW presentations

Eily and Mandi reached Victoria, BC on Thursday 14th 2008! Afer 54 Days on the Road and over 2000km!!!!

8/16/2008 (Sat):	Mandi left Victoria for her solo journey back to Spokane, Washington. What a great pleasure it has been to have her a part of the RTW team; she has contributed with her heart, yoga inspiration, and with her great love for adventure.


8/14/2008 (Thu):	Up bright and early for the final ride to Royal Roads University, Victoria. Many moments of reflection, and sauna like road conditions up the Malahat. At 3:30pm Mandi and I had the opportunity to talk to 40 Royal Roads students, in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, about the RTW initiative.
8/13/2008 (Wed):	Record day of 140km and 11 hours of cycling from Comox to Ladysmith. YEAH!
8/8/2008 (Fri):	Today we leave for a few days in Cortes Island, passing through Campbell River and Quadra Island. A new adventure to visit the beautiful islands in the area and discover what they have to offer. Today Comox Valley Echo addition comes out with the RTW article. I am now on Cortes lsland taking in the beautiful small island feel of Cortes. Calm warm waters, white sand, and still nights make it feel like a remote paradise. Arrived in time for a Island wide annual Dance on Saturday.
8/6/2008 (Wed):	Exciting time exploring the many options available for Environmental and Conscious living in Courtney/Comox.
8/5/2008 (Tue):	Good Interview with the Comox Valley Echo, and a picture of me lifting my bike to the sky. Impressed with an environmentally conscious nature, already present in town.
8/3/2008 (Sun):	Amazing scenery and view of the ocean on the ride to Courtney. Interested to see what this area has to offer, and excited to make new connections.
8/2/2008 (Sat):	Left Vancouver with joy to be on the road again. Horseshoe bay ferry to Nanaimo. On the Island at last!
8/1/2008 (Fri):	Learned about Community Gardens in the Rain, and the Lighthouse Building Centre. The first rainy weather yet was left for the city
7/31/2008 (Thu):	RTW team visits University of British Columbia to tour the In- vessel composter, bike shop, and many Green buildings on campus. What a great example of how green campus life can be.
7/26/2008 (Sat):	Arrived in Vancouver from Yarrow after 1,500km cycled, five weeks on the road, 11 sustainable sites visited. Vancouver's Celebration of Light fireworks display welcomed us with music, 400,000 people gathered, and a dazzling show in English Bay.
7/23/2008 (Wed):	Over Sunday Summit, Allison pass, to make up the 110km to Hope on some of the trickiest road yet. Although they have been great challenges, the hills--mountains infact-- are finally over! After the adventure of the last month, my goal of cycling to from Calgary to the West Coast is very close to becoming reality.
7/21/2008 (Mon):	Extremely Exhausted! - We just pushed the final 40 km from Hadely, and are now in Princeton. A long day of mostly uphills, 70 km of head wind, and over 100 degrees outside. OH. and we cycled through a desert too. Altogether 13 hours on the road completing a very long day!!!
7/20/2008 (Sun):	Arrived in Osoyoos. Desert climate and hot sun allows Ride the Wave team to reenergize. Next Stop: Princeton!
7/19/2008 (Sat):	Camping at Johnstone Creek. Looking forward to the next leg of our journey: An intense four days of cycling to Chilliwack.
7/16/2008 (Wed):	Reached Paulson Summit at 1535m. Into Grand Forks with expectation to visit the Eco-building of the Sanctuary and Shangrala tomorrow.
7/15/2008 (Tue):	Mandi Walters begins cycling (Officially Joins) the RTW team!
7/14/2008 (Mon):	Fabulous day of berry picking, and campfire dinner-- Content in the wilds Mulvey Creek
7/12/2008 (Sat):	Rode 90 Km to Mulvey Creek Co-oporative near Slocan. Beautiful scenery, yet overall exhausting day under the Sun.
7/11/2008 (Fri):	Excellent First Radio experience on Kootney Co-op Radio, Debuts and Encores. RTW interviewed John Alton of the Eco-society, and Christoph Marten's at his Urban farm.
7/10/2008 (Thu):	Big day tomorrow -- two media interviews, and 2 sustainable initiatives to visit.
7/8/2008 (Tue):	Got to Nelson feeling rejuvenated.
7/5/2008 (Sat):	Arrived at Yasodhara Ashram for three days of Karma Yoga
7/4/2008 (Fri):	Arrived at Crawford Bay Campground after very tough day.
